Education and Outreach

Education, human resource development (EHRD), and knowledge transfer are essential components of the center vision, as they amplify the long term the impact of our research. Nanophotonics has the potential to make a significant impact on major challenges of national interest, including high efficiency light emitters, energy conversion devices, and imaging and information technologies. Additionally, some of the most exciting and publicly visible ideas in contemporary science, such as quantum information and quantum computing, and optical cloaking, are accessible through nanophotonics. Hence, we are developing education and outreach programs that are integrated with the research of the center with the aim of fostering student interest in photonics and materials science. We are also developing entrepreneurial programs to provide graduates of the center with the skills and vision to transform their fundamental breakthroughs into new technologies available through commercialization.

Michigan REU Program

The C-PHOM REU program is a ten-week experience that begins the 1st week of June. The program provides undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with an opportunity to conduct summer research with faculty and students in the fields of nanophotonics, nanomaterials, and nanophysics. The deadline for applications is February 1st. The application and more information may be found at

High School Research Program

The C-PHOM H.S. research program consists of a nearly year-round hands-on research opportunity. During the first spring, several Saturdays are dedicated to orientation, training, and matching with laboratory groups. During the summer, there is an 8-week residential program on the UM campus. During the winter, the students are expected to participate in local, regional, and national science fairs, utilizing the research experience gained during their UM stay. The application and more information can be found at
